Zimbabwe players to suffer pay cut, confirms ZC Chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani

Zimbabwe Cricket has suffered a lot in recent times. They were suspended last year by the ICC for the government’s involvement in running the cricketing activities and the players suffered the most due to the same. Zimbabwe also missed out a place in the U19 and Women’s T20 World Cup. However, the suspension was lifted later and soon it seemed everything is back to normal for them.

But that isn’t the case. The Zimbabwe Cricket (ZC) is suffering financial issues at the moment and they have decided to cut down the players’ salaries. ZC Chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani confirmed the news in a recent press interaction. However, he didn’t disclose the exact figures cut down and said that the players have been informed of the same. The players have also confirmed that they were informed of pay cut unofficially.

We will rather sacrifice today and survive tomorrow

Mukuhlani realises the salary cut is hard on the players but is of the opinion that they should go through it for a better tomorrow. “It’s an on-going process, yes, we will have to cut back. It can’t be business as usual. Obviously it’s a bit of a touchy subject. But I will assume that everyone will accept it. We will rather make sacrifices today and survive tomorrow. It’s bring and take, a bargaining process.” he was quoted as saying by Indian Express.

The ban was revoked in the next few months after which international cricket returned to the country. Zimbabwe recently hosted Sri Lanka for a two-match Test series. In the first Test, the visitors outplayed them despite scoring more than 350 runs in the first innings thanks to Angelo Mathews’ stunning double hundred.

The home team, in the second Test, did put up a strong show dominating Sri Lanka for the four days only to be denied by the weather. Sikandar Raza was the star for them as he picked up a seven-wicket haul and also scored a half-century with the bat. Zimbabwe will now tour Bangladesh for a one-off Test and 3-match T20I series later this month.
