The defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have managed to secure only two wins in eight league matches of the Indian Premier League 2022. Although they did show some signs of improvement in the games against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Mumbai Indians (MI) the narrow losses against Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Gujarat Titans (GT) have hurt their chances of securing a place in the playoffs.

The team’s batters have been average, but have produced good performances on most of the occasions and have helped to post a respectable total on the board. But the team is missing the potent bowling attack, which they had in the last few editions. Key pacer Deepak Chahar was the second most expensive pick in the IPL 2022 mega auction but he has been ruled out of the entire tournament due to injury concerns.

The all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Dwayne Bravo have not looked in the best of their forms in terms of being economical and picking up regular wickets. The Englishman Chris Jordan has been expensive with his bowling in all four appearances this season. He has picked up only two wickets at an economy of 10.51. His figures of 0/58 against the Titans ousted him from the Playing XI. With Jordan being an average bowler and a handy batter in the lower order, there were some similar options for CSK in the auction for which they did show some interest but could not avail their services.

3 Players CSK could’ve picked instead of Chris Jordan

1. Jason Holder

The Caribbean all-rounder Jason Holder has been a quality player across all the formats of the game. He has served as the captain of the West Indies Test team as well. In the T20I series against England earlier this year, he returned as the highest wicket-taker with 15 scalps in five games at an economy of 7.4 and contributed 37 runs with the bat. These performances and his impressive track record earned him a contract of INR 8.75 crores from Lucknow Super Giants (LSG).

However, the teams like MI, RR, and CSK also raised their paddle to pick the all-rounder in their team. Looking at the performances of these teams in the tournament, certainly, the two lowest-ranked teams on the table, MI and CSK, are in a dire need of an experienced all-rounder.

In the context of CSK, they surely have the likes of Bravo and Dwaine Pretorius in the XI, but both the players do not offer much flexibility with the bat. On the other hand, Holder can score runs against the new ball as well. So far in his six appearances for LSG this season, Holder has nine wickets and 32 runs to his name.
