Team India scripted a stunning victory in the first One Day International of the three-match series against England at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune by 66 runs to lead the series by 1-0. However, ahead of the second ODI, the hosts have been dealt with a massive blow as it is learned that their in-form middle-order batsman Shreyas Iyer has been ruled out of the rest of the series.
During the first fixture, Iyer fell on his left shoulder while attempting to stop a shot from England opener Jonny Bairstow and was in extreme pain. BCCI released an official statement stating that the batsman has subluxated his shoulder and is likely to miss the first few matches of IPL 2021 along with the remaining of the ODI series.
Shreyas was in a blistering form in the T20Is as in 4 innings he scored a brilliant 121 runs at an average of 40.33. However, with the middle-order batter being injured, India will be forced to make a change in their winning combination for the next game.
3 Players who can replace Shreyas Iyer in the next ODI
1. Rishabh Pant
India had managed to surprise many fans and analysts by leaving out in-form wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant from the Playing XI for the first ODI. KL Rahul was picked ahead of Pant as the first-choice keeper of the side. The 23-year-old Pant has been at his career-best form as he produced many match-defining innings in the Test series against Australia and England.
The batsman also performed decently in the five-match T20I series against England as he collected 102 runs from four innings. Thus, it won’t be wrong to say that the batsman can find a place in the team for the second ODI as having a power-hitter like Rishabh in the middle-order will provide a boost to the playing XI.
As far as the Delhi-star’s ODI career is concerned, he has featured in just 16 ODIs for India, thus far scoring 374 runs at a strike rate of 103.6 and an average of 26.71. His last ODI outing for India came in January 2020 during the Australia tour of India.
