A few months after India won the inaugural T20 World Cup in South Africa, the Indian Premier League (IPL) was launched by the BCCI. There were a lot of speculations and doubts about the T20 format at that time and a lot of people were quite critical of the new format. Despite everything, the fans and audiences seemed quite excited about the new format and large crowds at T20 games lured some big businessman and bollywood stars to the newly introduced IPL.
A lot has changed in the last decade and T20 cricket has established itself as one of the most followed cricket formats. Inspired by IPL, today almost every major cricket board has its own T20 league. In 2018, we even saw associates and younger cricketing nations like Canada and Afghanistan introducing their own T20 leagues.
Amidst all this, the IPL has established itself as a successful brand and is undoubtedly the premier and most watched T20 league around the World. Getting an IPL contract is the topmost priority for many cricketers nowadays.
Here are the three reasons why the IPL is the best T20 league in the world
1. High-Quality Cricket
One of the major reasons why the IPL stands out from other T20 leagues around the world is that almost every team in the IPL has some match winning players and there are no underdogs before the start of the tournament. Each team gets an equal amount of budget before the IPL auction and it ensures that no team has an advantage over the other in selecting their players.
Unlike some leagues where one team has all big names and most of the other teams are playing catch up, the IPL gives each of its franchises equal playing platform.
Some of the best players across the world prefer playing only in the IPL and make themselves available for the tournament. Moreover, more often than not, no international cricket is played when the tournament is in progress which leads to almost all the players available for their respective teams and the high-quality cricket is on display.
2. Best set of foreign players
Most of the foreign players prefer playing in the IPL over any other T20 league in the world. But getting an IPL contract for a foreign player is not easy as every team is just allowed a maximum of 8 foreign players in their squad. Only the best players get picked for the tournament as the franchises are very particular while spending money on them.
While there are a few overseas players associated with a single franchise for a long time even as some new players like Jofra Archer and Evin Lewis are coming through every year who are always willing to give their best for their respective teams.
3. Good domestic talent
Cricket is played in every part of India and is the most favorite sport of the 130 crore Indians. India also has a good domestic setup and every year a lot of young cricketers are given a chance to play in the IPL. Over the time, the franchises in the IPL have started organizing camps around different parts of the country and new talents are spotted by them. Some IPL franchises have even started their own cricket academies where young raw talents are trained and are guided by some big cricketing superstars.
All this has made sure that the T20 tournament has the best lot of young cricketers in the World. In every IPL season, some of the budding players have showcased their game and some of them even got the opportunity to represent India in international cricket. Players like Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja and now Mayank Markande among others are products of the IPL that went on to play for their country.
Besides all this, the thing that makes the IPL the best T20 league in the world is the continuous love and support of fans all around the world. The crowd attendance in IPL games are the highest in the cricketing world and television ratings are unmatched with any other T20 league.
