Much like Australia, the Caribbean team too showed fears in playing against Sri Lanka in Colombo. A week after the Australian walkover, the Windies team decided to concede their crucial two points to the hosts. The Windies were placed in Group A alongside Australia, India, Zimbabwe and Kenya apart from Sri Lanka. With the top four teams making it to the Quarters, everyone expected Zimbabwe and Kenya will miss out.

However, the walkover given by Windies to Sri Lanka gave a chance to the underdogs. Windies started with a big win against Zimbabwe before going down against India, a walk over to Sri Lanka and shocking 73-run defeat to Kenya in three consecutive games. They were levelled with Kenya and Zimbabwe with two points before their must-win game against Australia.

The Caribbean side edged out the Aussies by four wickets in the 230-run chase which they achieved with only seven deliveries to spare. Both Zimbabwe and Kenya losing their final league games ensured the two-time CWC champions made it to the Quarters.
