The Tamil Nadu cricketer got the attention of cricketing fraternity with his elegant batting in the Ranji Trophy 2003-04. He was immediately drafted into the Test team when the country hosted the Australian side. More than his batting Dinesh Karthik was praised for his work behind the stumps. His quick reflexes made him a first choice keeper-batsman in Tests and ODIs.

Then as fate would have it his career took a nosedive with the emergence of MS Dhoni in the Indian team. Due to his poor batting returns, he became a secondary option on the side. Still, he was part of the 2007 T20 World Cup squad which India won under the helm of Dhoni. After that, he was only considered when the regular stars were rested.

A year ago Karthik found his mojo again and proved his worth when he led the side to a famous win in the final of Nidahas Trophy. He was also given the middle-order duties in the ODI side and made the cut for the 2019 World Cup. Though he played only 3 games he let down the team in the all-important semi-final. Subsequently, he was dropped from the squad and now it will be a miracle if he is given many opportunities in the future.
