If there was ever a batsman with an appetite for humongous scores, it was Brian Charles Lara. The greatest Batsman of the modern era – A southpaw with a high backlift who perfected the art of nonchalant stroke-making. He was in the elite breed of batsmen comprising the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Ricky Ponting, Sir Don Bradman, and Jacques Kallis.

In 1994, Brian Lara broke two standing world records in a span of three months. First, breaking Gary Sobers’ record for the highest individual score in test cricket against England at St.John’s in Antigua. Then he went past Hanif Mohammad 499 to score a quintuple century in first-class cricket. A decade later, in 2004, the hunger for runs had not subdued as Lara scored an unbeaten 400 against the same opposition and the same ground.

The match also saw a young Chris Gayle score a 69. Gayle would later go on to score two triple centuries in his magnificent career. The match eventually ended in a draw.
