Chris Gayle welcomes David Warner to prestigious Triple Club

David Warner, on Saturday, created history as he scored his maiden Test triple hundred in the ongoing second Test against Pakistan at the Adelaide Oval. It is a remarkable turnaround for a player who missed one year of Test cricket and had a torrid time in the Ashes. The southpaw has been in stunning form in the ongoing home season and the triple century is just a testament of that.

Warner’s place in the Test side was in question after he performed horribly in the Ashes, scoring less than 100 runs in ten innings. However, the opener has now put those debates to bed with a couple of brilliant knocks. He started the Test season at home with a 154-run knock at The Gabba before scoring the triple century.

Warner amassed 335 not out in Australia’s enormous total of 589-3 declared on the second afternoon of the day-night clash. The knock came off 418 balls and included 39 fours and just one six which came only after he crossed the 300-run mark. Warner now has the tenth highest score in Test history after surpassing the likes of Sir Don Bradman and Mark Taylor during his monumental knock.

Warner did have the chance to break Brian Lara’s record of highest Test score but Tim Paine decided to declare the innings in order to have a go at Pakistan with the ball. The decision turned out to be spot on as the hosts finished the day firmly on top after reducing the hapless tourists to 96 for 6. Australia have already taken a lead in the series after winning the first game by an innings and five runs.

As expected, David Warner drew praise from all around for his his once-in-a-lifetime knock. West Indies great Chris Gayle also made sure to wish Warner for his marathon knock. Gayle’s message was a special one as the legendary batsman welcomed the Australian to the 300-club. Gayle is also one of the very few batsmen to have scored a triple ton in Tests. He had scored 333 against Sri Lanka in Galle in 2010.

The West Indies star, in fact, has two triple centuries to his name. His other triple century came against South Africa when he scored 317 in 2005 in Antigua. Coming to Gayle’s message, he took to Twitter to welcome Warner to the prestigious club, writing: “Welcome to the Triple club, @davidwarner31 – Top stuff 👍🏿
