Ever since the start of this season, there is one name that is topping the run charts in the white-ball tournaments and that is Devdutt Padikkal. The Karnataka opener has been in prime form and has piled up the runs consistently. Be it the 50-over format or the T20s, he has been leading the run charts in both formats.

In the Vijay Hazare Trophy, Padikkal scored 609 runs at an average of 67.66 as Karnataka went on to lift the title. Those runs included two hundreds and five half-centuries as well. In the shortest format, Padikkal has raised his game and brought out another gear. He’s been batting like a dream. The 19-year-old scored 580 runs at an average of 64.45 which includes five fifties and a ton. These runs have come at a strike-rate of 175.75 and invariably, he has given Karnataka a strong start.

Thus, the way the young opener has been batting, he deserves to be tried at the top level. There is no doubt that he will be among the favourites for the next India ‘A’ tour/series. And if he does well in those games, a national call-up might not be too far away.
