It was a dream year for Australia as they finally lifted their maiden T20 World Cup after beating their Trans-Tasman rivals New Zealand in the final in November in Dubai. Though the year didn’t start off well for Australia as they lost the Test series 1-2 to India at home in January. After that, it was all limited-overs assignments for the team from down under as they toured New Zealand, West Indies, and Bangladesh.

They lost the T20I series in all three countries and nobody gave them a chance in the T20 World Cup as they headed into the tournament as underdogs. Apart from the team clinching the elusive silverware, there were some records which were achieved by the individuals by their outstanding performances. The Australian team has continued their form even after the T20 World Cup as they are already 1-0 in the ongoing Ashes series.

1. Maiden T20 World Cup triumph

Australia finally ended the wait for the only ICC title, in white-ball cricket, which was missing from their cabinet as the five-time ODI World Cup and two-time Champions trophy winners won their first-ever T20 World Cup after defeating their neighbors New Zealand in the final. The last time they reached the final of a T20 World Cup was back in 2010 when they lost it to England at Barbados. This time Aaron Finch and his men made sure that the trophy will be heading down under.

2.David Warner became the highest run-scorer for Australia in a T20 World Cup

David Warner, the Player of the Tournament in the T20 World Cup, smashed 289 runs as he became the Australian batter with most runs in an edition of the T20 World Cup. The southpaw overtook  Mathew Hayden who had scored 265 runs in the inaugural edition in 2007 in South Africa. Warner was in sublime form as he recorded three half-centuries in the tournament, a crucial one which came in the final too. He shared an important 92-run partnership with Mitchell Marsh as Australia finally ended their weight and lifted the trophy which had always eluded them.

3.Mitchell Marsh scored most T20I runs by Australian batter in a calendar year

Mitchell Marsh had a dream run for Australia in T20Is in 2021. The Player of the Match in the T20 World Cup final smashed most runs (627) by an Australian batter in a calendar year. With 531 runs in the year 2018, captain Aaron Finch is now second in the list. Notably, Marsh scored a magnificent 77* off just 50 balls in the summit clash to seal the T20 World Cup triumph for the OZ. He has scored six half-centuries in T20Is at number three this year, with his counter-attacking fifty in the final being the most important one.

4.Nathan Lyon reaches 400 wickets landmark

Nathan Lyon became the third Australian bowler after after Shane Warne and Glenn McGrath to complete 400 Test wickets. He also became the first Australian off-spinner to get the landmark. Overall, he is the seventh spinner with over 400 scalps in the longest format of the game. Notably, Lyon also became the fourth Australia bowler to take most four wicket-hauls (35) in Test matches.

5.Pat Cummins became the first Australian in 126 years to take five-for on captaincy debut

Pat Cummins with his five-for in the first Ashes test became the first bowler in 126 years to achieve the feat on captaincy debut after George Giffin had done the same in the year 1895. He also became the first skipper to take five wicket-haul in an Ashes Test since Bob Willis in 1984. Cummins achieved more records as he became the tenth captain to reach the feat in Ashes and fifth Australian.
