In the IPL auction hosted by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the upcoming 2021 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) on February 18 in Chennai, franchise Delhi Capitals (DC) stuck gold as they managed to acquire the services of one of the best batsmen of modern era, Steve Smith for a paltry price of INR 2.2 crores.

Under the leadership of the Australian veteran, Rajasthan Royals (RR) had a torrid run in IPL 2020 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as they finished as the wooden-spooners in the points table. In addition, Smith had a poor run in the 13th edition as he could score just 311 runs in 14 games at an average of 25.91 and strike rate of 131.22

After an underwhelming performance, the batsman was released by Rajasthan ahead of IPL 2021 and no other franchise seemed very much interested in roping in the batting great. Though Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) had placed the opening bid for him at his base price of INR 2 crores, they didn’t bid further and DC picked him for INR 2.2 crores.

After the auction, the official social media handle of Delhi posted the video of many cricketers, who were picked by the management in the auction, showing their excitement on piling their trade for DC in the upcoming League. However, one major video that was missing was of Smith that raised a lot of eyebrows among the fans.

Finally, on February 23, Tuesday, the Capitals shared a video message from Smith saying, “I am really excited about joining the team this year. I think it is a great squad of players, a great coach, and I am looking forward to getting there and creating some amazing memories. Hopefully will help the team go one better than last year,”

Former Indian cricketer and batting coach of IPL franchise Punjab Kings (formerly known as Kings XI Punjab) also saw the video but he was quick to point out a funny thing. Jaffer noticed that throughout the video Smith didn’t blink his eyes even for once. The veteran, who is known for his wit and humour, took to his official Twitter handle to take a funny jibe at Smith using a meme. The meme had a picture of Shoaib Akhtar with the write-up, “aapne mere bacche dara diye (you scared my kids)”. He captioned the meme, “aise kyu dekh rahe ho? (why are you looking like this?)”.
