Dinesh Karthik made his international debut way back in 2004 against England at Lords. However, he has struggled to stay put in his position owing to inconsistent form and the emergence of the likes of Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Nevertheless, the Tamil Nadu wicket-keeper batsman has somehow managed to stake his claim back and is currently a part of India’s limited overs fixtures.

However, en route his journey of making a comeback, he had to go through a rough patch. Abhishek Nayar, the Mumbai cricketer stayed with the wicket-keeper batsman in the summer of 2016. The Mumbai all-rounder recently spoke to the media and revealed the desperation Karthik went through during the phase when he was out of contention.

The Home of Pain for Karthik

“It was a torture room for Karthik. He is used to the good life. He stays in a bungalow back home in Chennai. But when he came to me, I wanted to take him to a zone where he’d never been before. It was tough and he would get angry on occasions. One time he begged me to let him go spend a night at a hotel. But I didn’t relent” Nayar was quoted as saying by the Indian Express.

Nayar also talked about how Karthik’s confidence was severely dented following his reduction of price in the Indian Premier League. “He hadn’t had a good Ranji season back then and he’d seen his stocks drop from Rs 9 crore the previous season to Rs 2 crore in the IPL auction, being picked by Gujarat Lions It was a moment he (Karthik) felt that if he fails this time, then no team will show him interest again,” the Mumbaikar added.

Karthik is currently playing in the Nidahas Trophy for the T20 triangular series featuring India and Bangladesh. He has recently played a quick-fire hand of 39 runs off 25 balls and helped India register their second victory in the tournament. The veteran has also been effective with the gloves behind the wickets. He has also been named as the captain for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the upcoming season of the IPL.
