Central Stags bowler Andrew Mathieson has put curtains on his career from all forms of cricket after having one of the shortest careers in New Zealand cricket. His short stint was equally memorable though. Born and brought up in Hamilton, the 27-year-old featured in 23 first-class games and also played a single one-day international for the Black Caps against England in 2015.

He is most famously remembered for his delivery to England batsman Jason Roy, as he bamboozled the opener with a short, wide offering and the batsman handed a simple catch to Martin Guptill at point. Mathieson is one of the 24 cricketers who scalped a wicket with their first ODI delivery. His transition from domestic to international cricket came on the back memorable 2014-15 domestic season, in which he collected 31 wickets.

After being given a sudden call-up, his first wicket reduced England to 45/5 before they settled down and chased down 192 to win by three wickets. He ended his debut with figures of 1/40 and wasn’t chosen for the following tour of Zimbabwe and South Africa, which meant that he played only one ODI in his international career.

He will be missed sorely

Manager of high performance for central district cricket in New Zealand said that the player will be missed after he became an integral part of the Stags setup.

“Matho has been an integral part of the Stags set up since his arrival from our Northern borders several years ago and has provided us with many lasting memories both on and off the field”, said Lance Hamilton, Manager of High Performance for Central Districts Cricket as quoted by stuff.co.nz.

“From my perspective, Matho the man and the character will be missed just as much as the player who donned the Stags crest across the various formats and his presence will be sorely missed in the dressing room” added Hamilton.
