Gujarat Lions’ most successful bowler and the leader of their bowling attack Andrew Tye injured his left shoulder during last night’s match against the Mumbai Indians at their home ground the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot. Tye has dislocated his shoulder and thus will no longer take part in the remainder of the IPL season.

He was fielding at midwicket as skipper Suresh Raina took the bowling responsibilities after his fast bowlers went for plenty with the new ball. Mumbai opener Parthiv Patel was off to a great start and in the 11th over hammered Raina to midwicket for what appeared like another boundary.

Tye covered some ground and slid to push the ball away from the ropes but it rather went on to hit the boundary. While doing that, he landed on his left shoulder and was in immense pain, the team physio rushed to the spot and it appeared like he had dislocated it, the shoulder socket seemed to have popped out.

“The shoulder popped out of the socket and remained out for a while. They put it back in at the hospital. The extent of the damage is still unknown. I will be flying home in the next couple of days to figure that out. And as for the recovery time, I am not too sure at the moment, but hopefully it’s not too long.” Tye said describing his injury.

“Unfortunately this is the end of the tournament for me,” the Australian pacer added. “As heartbreaking as it is, I have enjoyed my time here. The people at Gujarat Lions have looked after me well. The fans have been unbelievable. The messages of support and good wishes I have got from everyone have been overwhelming. All I can say is, thanks to the fans and the franchise for giving me this opportunity and hopefully I will be back in the IPL next year.”

“Losing a match-winner like Andrew Tye is a huge blow to the team, especially at such a crucial juncture in the tournament. We, at Gujarat Lions, wish Andrew a speedy recovery and thank him for his contributions to the team,” a Gujarat Lions spokesperson said.

Raina then had to give James Faulkner the ball in the super over after the game ended at levels on the conclusion of the 40 overs in the contest. Faulkner was hit for 12 which proved a bit too much for the Lions’ batsmen Brendon McCullum and Aaron Finch to chase in their response against Mumbai’s Jasprit Bumrah.

This is a huge blow to the already struggling Gujarat team as the Australian was the only bowler who was getting them wickets on a consistent basis. He picked a five-wicket haul against the Rising Pune Supergiant in his very first outing and has been amongst the wickets in almost every game.

The right-arm pacer has 12 wickets to his name in 6 matches and was among the leading wicket-takers in the tournament as well.

Earlier the team lost West Indies allrounder Dwayne Bravo and chinaman Shivil Kaushik to injuries and brought in Irfan Pathan and uncapped leg-spinner Ankit Soni as their replacements, the management will once again need to sit back and find a replacement as the tournament heads towards the business end.
