Anil Kumble, the former Indian spinner was brought down from his coaching role with the national squad in 2017. Now, a couple of days back, he was appointed as the coach of Kings XI Punjab for the IPL 2020 season and he already looks a fan of Ravichandran Ashwin, who will be a part of his franchise in the upcoming season of India’s cash-rich league.
Earlier, Ashwin was dropped from the national team when India played a two-match Test series against West Indies. This decision by team management caught the eyes of critics in support of Chennai-born spinner. But it was pretty sure that he will be picked in the team against Proteas because of his record in India.
He came out with strong approach in the ongoing series and scalped a total of 14 wickets in two Tests with one more game yet to happen in the series. After taking the wicket of Quinton de Kock in the first innings of the first Test, he now jointly stands with Muralitharan for the fastest bowler to take 350 Test wickets.
During, the first Test, he clinched the milestone of taking 350 wickets and Kumble looks impressed with him and termed him as the “premier spinner” in the longest format for India.
Anil Kumble opines over Ravichandran Ashwin
KXIP coach Anil Kumble feels that he is always an asset for the team and is a classy spinner who brings different variations in his trait, “He’s a class act. He’s the fastest to 350 Test wickets, it’s something amazing. You know, I think Ashwin, not just as a bowler but as an all-rounder, is an asset to the team,” the 48-year-old said as quoted by CricketNext.
Ashwin led KXIP in the last couple of seasons but failed in making them win their maiden IPL title. There is no confirmation over his captaincy in the upcoming season but he will be a part of the team as confirmed by the co-owner of the team.
Kumble will play an important role in the upcoming auction, which is going to take place in Kolkata as the team-management can look for an overhaul of the team ahead of the IPL 2020.
