Sri Lanka have appointed Anton Roux as their fielding coach, with effect from March 7, 2022. Roux has been appointed for this position with some amount of experience prior to signing up for his new role. While he never played for South Africa, he has featured in four first-class matches and as many List-A games.

The USA-born South African cricketer has also coached the Netherlands cricket team from 2013 to 2016 and had also served as the assistant fielding coach of Nottinghamshire county. He is currently the assistant coach of Otago in New Zealand domestic cricket. Taking all these experiences into account, Sri Lanka Cricket might have thought about bringing him on board in order to strengthen their national team’s fielding performances.

According to reports in Cricbuzz, Anton Roux “will be in-charge of fielding across all national teams and the High Performance Center.” The report further states that “As part of further restructuring of the HPC, the Executive Committee also made appointments to the ‘A’, U19 and Emerging teams.”

Former batter Avishka Gunawardene has been appointed as the head coach of the ‘A’ team whereas, Sri Lanka’s 1996 World Cup-winning member Upul Chandana has been named the fielding coach. Apart from that, former player Jehan Mubarak has been named the head coach of the U19 team and Ruwan Kalpage has been offered a similar role for the Emerging team.

After a string of disappointing performances, the island nation would be hoping to get back into rhythm in the second half of this year with a couple of multi-nation tournaments coming up. They would be eager to put their best foot forward in the Asia Cup, which will be played in the T20 format this time around as a dress rehearsal for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 which is scheduled to be held in Australia from October 16 to November 13. Sri Lanka had suffered a whitewash in the away bilateral series against India earlier this year.
