Glenn Maxwell, on Friday, came up with yet another batting masterclass in the ongoing Big Bash League as he scored a whirlwind fifty to take his team to an impressive win over bitter cross-town rivals Melbourne Renegades. Unlike his usual batting tactics, Glenn Maxwell started cautiously before exploding and blowing away the Renegades.

He eventually remained unbeaten on 83 from 45 balls and scored 49 off those runs on the final 16 balls. After the Stars lost their top-order, their fate depended on Maxwell’s performance and the hard-hitting batsman did not disappoint. After being reduced to 54 for 3 in the seventh over, the match was drifting away from the Stars before Maxwell and Nick Larkin (33 not out off 28 balls) steadied the ship and took the team over the line.

With the match’s fate hanging in a balance, Maxwell started slowly and took six singles on the first six balls he faced. He soon got going by launching Will Sutherland for a maximum and finally shifted gears when the Stars needed 60 runs from the last five overs. He eventually finished the game with a six off Dan Christian.

As if the performance was not enough, Maxwell won more hearts with his humble reply to his Stars teammate Sandeep Lamichhane on Twitter. Soon after the game ended, Lamichhane took to Twitter to lavish praise on Maxwell for his amazing performance. The Nepal leg-spinner pointed out Maxwell’s monster sixes and also cheekily asked if he belonged to this planet, writing:

“@Gmaxi_32, you were just amazing.πŸ‘ Those were some monster hits from you.πŸ₯³ I have a question for you, Are you seriously from this planet?”

In reply, the ever-humble Australia star wrote: “Same planet as you legend! Keep being a genius πŸ’š”

Lamichhane had also played the game and picked up two wickets for 39 runs off his four overs as Renegades scored 168 for 7 in their allotted 20 overs. Shaun Marsh was the top-scorer for the Renegades, scoring 63 from 43. With the win, the Stars continue to remain at the top. They have now won seven of their eight games. On the other hand, the Renegades remain winless after eight matches.
