India Women’s WT20 campaign came to an end after their crushing loss in the semifinals. Earlier they had topped the group stage winning every game. However, they failed to go beyond the English hurdle, the same group that spoiled their party in the World Cup final last year. The trophy decider will be played tomorrow between Australia and England who also contested the 2014 and 2016 finals.
Indian pacer Jhulan Goswami had announced her retirement from the shortest format recently. Watching the action out of the field, Goswami analysed India’s shambolic performance in the knockouts. She also wasn’t quite pleased with the decision to drop Mithali Raj for such a key encounter.
There has been a lot of debate over the decision to drop Mithali Raj. She has been regarded as a legendary figure and no one saw the exclusion coming. The decision was taken by the team management in presence of captain Harmanpreet Kaur and coach Ramesh Powar. Goswami found the development shocking but lauded the girls for their performances throughout the tournament.
“The decision was taken by the team management. I am sure they have their reasons, but as an Indian cricket fan I felt bad to see Mithali sitting in the dugout. It’s just one bad day for our girls, and it’s all over. We played good cricket throughout the group stage but failed to hold our nerve in the semifinal,” she was quoted as saying by Cricket Next.
The batting display against England was shoddy
India were off to a splendid start, having won the toss and electing to bat first. With the score 88/2 and six overs left, things were going quite well for the Women in Blue. However a sudden run out triggered a collapse as India were all out for 112 runs. Goswami stated that there was serious lack of application by the batters.
“We won the toss and decided to bat but could not make it count. Despite the good start by Smriti and Taniya we crumbled. The girls batted well in the warm-up matches as well as group league stage of the WT20 meet, but our batting display against England was shoddy. Our players failed to adapt to the conditions and lacked application.”
