Rain is the only thing that is going to stop Australia from regaining the Ashes in the Perth Test itself as the hosts reduced England to 132/4 after taking a 259-run first inning lead on the rain-marred 4th day. Despite losing Mitchell Marsh and Steven Smith early on, Aussies posted a huge total of 662/9 thanks to contributions from Tim Paine and Pat Cummins. The home side will be hoping to get a decent number of overs for picking up six England wickets on a day with rain forecast.

All the stats and numbers that were created during the 4th day’s play of the Perth Test:

2 – Number of 600+ totals in Test cricket for Australia in the last 23 months. India (7 totals of 600+) are the only other team to post 600+ in this period in Tests.

8 – James Anderson, Stuart Broad, Chris Woakes, Craig Overton and Mooen Ali conceding 100+ runs is only the 8th instance of five bowlers conceding 100+ runs in a Test inning. This was the 3rd time where five England bowlers conceded hundred in a Test inning and the 2nd such instance in the Ashes. Five English bowlers conceded 100+ runs in the 2009 Ashes Test in Cardiff.

49* – Australia declaring their innings with Tim Paine unbeaten on 49 is only the 8th instance in Test cricket where a team declared their innings with a player unbeaten on 49 and the first such one by Australia.

142 – Runs conceded by Stuart Broad in Australian innings without picking up a wicket are the joint 2nd most for any bowler in an Ashes innings. Andrew Caddick had figures of 0/146 in the 2001 Oval Test.

239Steven Smith’s 239 is the highest individual score in the Ashes since Justin Langer’s 250 in the 2002 Melbourne Test. This is also the 4th highest score by a captain in the Ashes and the highest since Bob Simpson’s 311 in 1964.

570 – The 570 runs scored for the 5th wicket in this Test are the most ever made in a Test match. England had a 237-run stand in the first innings and an unbeaten 32-run partnership in the 2nd innings while Australia had a partnership of 301 runs. The previous most runs made in a Test for the 5th wicket were 563 runs during the Port of Spain Test between Windies and England in 2009.

662/9 – The total of 662 is the highest total in the Ashes on Australian soil. The previous highest total in the Ashes in Australia is 659/8 by Australia in Sydney back in 1946. This is also the first 600+ total in the Ashes since England’s 644 in the 2011 Sydney Test.

662/9 – Australia’s total of 662/9 is their 3rd highest total in Test cricket at home. They made 735/6 against Zimbabwe at this venue and 674/10 against India in 1948 Adelaide Test.
