England Head coach Trevor Bayliss stated that he would be stepping down from the job after his current contract expires. The announcement came after England’s heavy defeat in the fifth Ashes Test at Sydney. The former New South Wales player took over the coaching responsibilities in 2015.

He previously had a successful tenure with Sri Lanka (2007-2011) where they reached three ICC World Cup finals. He also made a significant contribution to IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders as a coach and guided them to two IPL title victories in 2012 and 2014.

Under his watch, England too had a good run where they won the ashes in 2015 and also won a test series in South Africa. His efforts also led the Englishmen into the finals of the ICC T20 World Cup in 2016.

Bayliss comments on his contract

Following 4-0 Ashes loss, the 55-year-old revealed that he had made clear to the Director of England Cricket, Andrew Strauss that he would not be extending his contract regardless of any result.

Bayliss spoke to the reporters after the fifth test match which England lost by an innings and 41 runs. He said, “I told Andrew Strauss probably 12 months ago that September 2019 is when I’m contracted to and that would see me out,”

“I’ve never been anywhere any more than four or five years. Whether you’re going well or not I’ve always felt that roundabout that four-year mark is time to change. A new voice, a slightly different approach slightly reinvigorates things, so I passed that on to him 12 months ago.” He further added.

Possible Retirement

Bayliss still has a lot of responsibilities left on his shoulders where England will face New Zealand, Pakistan, Australia and India in the next 12 months. His comments indicate that he might have his last assessment in 2019 where he will lead England in the ICC Cricket World Cup and then in the next Ashes Series.
