After Bangladesh thumped Sri Lanka in the tournament opener the other day, it was time for Pakistan to continue the norm. They faced Hong Kong today in a group A encounter and won easily by eight wickets to begin the Asia Cup on a high. It was a walk in the park for them and the chase of 117 runs was a stroll thanks to Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam who batted gamely and didn’t lose their wicket after an early departure of the explosive opener Fakhar Zaman.

Earlier in the day, it was Hong Kong who showed intent and opted to bat first after winning the toss. They were high on confidence after beating the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the final of the Asia Cup qualifiers earlier this month and deserved all the accolades coming their way. The skipper Anshuman Rath was confident of a decent performance from his batsmen and they started decently as well with Nizakat Khan scoring 11 runs off Mohammad Amir in the opening over.

Shadab breaks through

Rath, at the other end, looked solid and faced the new ball bowlers bravely. Just when one thought Hong Kong had gotten off to a solid start, the duo misjudged a single and Shadab Khan‘s direct found Nizakat short of his crease. The wicket opened the floodgates for Pakistan and didn’t miss out on an opportunity. Faheem Ashraf nipped out Rath and then came Shadab who struck in his very first over.

Soon Hong Kong were reduced to 44/5 from 32/1. But then there was still something in them to put up a fight. Kinchit Shah and Aizaz Khan battled their way and forged a 53-run stand to keep the Men in Green at bay. This was the period when Pakistan just let things drift away. But the credit had to be given to the batsmen for the way they played.

However, it was only a matter of time once the stand was broken. Usman Khan was introduced for his second spell and the left-arm seamer struck thrice in the 31st over to leave them reeling at 97/8. It was only due to the last wicket stand between Ehsan Nawaz and Nadeem Ahmed that they reached 116 but the score was never going to be enough to challenge the strong Pakistan team.

Meanwhile, the social media gimmicks were at work as they produced some hilarious memes during the course of the match.
