The Asia Cup is finally back after a hiatus nearing four years, and if the fans weren’t excited enough for the much-anticipated tournament, the ACC added fuel to it by announcing the fixture list a couple of days ago. Defending champions India clash in a blockbuster group tie against eternal rivals Pakistan on matchday two.

Both sides have undergone significant alterations since their last meeting in the tournament in 2018 and will be without some of their key players from the previous edition as this year’s tournament will be a T20 event. While it will be Rohit Sharma’s first major tournament as a skipper, he was the stand-in skipper in 2018 when India lifted its seventh Asia Cup trophy.

We list five key players from the 2018 edition, who won’t feature in this year’s tournament:

1. Shoaib Malik

Pakistan’s evergreen batter and jack of all trades Shoaib Malik, has featured for the national team for more than two decades and continues to be an asset even at the ripe age of 40.

The Pakistani all-rounder has got 2435 runs to his name in 111 innings in T20Is, averaging an impressive 31.21. He is the first cricketer to feature in 100 T20Is, and he is also the first Asian batter to breach the 2000 run mark in T20Is.

Malik’s absence in this year’s tournament could be crucial for the Men in Green as he was their second-leading run-getter in the 2018 edition of the tournament. His experience in the middle order would have added another layer of security to the relatively inexperienced batting order.
