Alyssa Healy has recently been appointed as the skipper of the NSW Breakers for the upcoming edition of the Women’s National Cricket League. In January this year, Alex Blackwell hung his boots from international and state cricket and Healy has been roped in as her replacement. Last year, Lisa Sthalekar, the former Australian batswoman, lauded her for her cricketing brains.

During Blackwell’s stint, NSW won the prestigious Ruth Preddy Cup as many as seven times and hence, the better-half of Aussie paceman Mitchell Starc will have massive boots to fill. Meanwhile, with Rachael Haynes, Australian women’s vice-captain and Elysse Perry, skipper of the Sydney Sixers, in the side, Healy didn’t expect the role to come her way. However, she is up for the challenge and is looking forward to the excitement.

“I think it will be a really exciting”- Healy

“It’s very exciting, (but) it did come as a shock to me a little bit. We’ve got Rachael and Pez in the side, so I thought after Alex retired one of them would take over the reins and I’d go on being normal Healy behind the stumps,” Healy was quoted as saying by cricket.com.au.

“But the opportunity arose and I grabbed it. I think it will be a really exciting, new challenge for me, I haven’t been captain of a side properly since under-17s or something. It’s a really successful team for me to jump into and try to continue that success,” the wicketkeeper-batswoman added.

Healy, who also happens to be the niece of Ian Healy, the retired Aussie wicketkeeper batter, has an experience of 58 ODIs, 80 T20Is and three Tests for her national team in which she has 830, 942 and 130 runs respectively. Her last assignment in national colors was way back in March during her team’s tour of India.
