On Saturday night, at least six people were killed by attackers near the London Bridge in what is being called a terror attack. Police said three attackers drove a vehicle into pedestrians on the famous bridge and then stabbed people in Borough Market. In the wake of this threat, the Australian team in England remains “comfortable” with the level of security provided to them.
The attacks led to at least six dead and 48 injured. This attack has come only two weeks after a suicide bombing at a concert in Manchester. After the Manchester attack, the South African team had shown concerns over their security in the country but ultimately settled to the safety guaranteed to them by the security forces of England. Back then, the South African team had toured England for a bilateral series.
Australia is one of three teams in London, which is one of the venues for the Champions Trophy. They will be playing Bangladesh on June 5 at The Oval in South London. In their opening game of the tournament, Australia and New Zealand shared a point each in a rain-abandoned match and will be eager to claim another point against Bangladesh who lost their tournament opener to England.
CA closely working with ICC security team
“As with the rest of the world, the Australian team is shocked and saddened at the events that have occurred in London overnight and our thoughts are with those directly involved and their loved ones,” CA said. “The team, support staff and travelling contingent have been accounted for.”
CA also said that their security team is working closely with the ICC to ensure utmost security for the players and support staff. At this stage, they are comfortable with the level of security being provided to them but will continue monitoring the situation.
