With a trail of 435 runs in the Boxing Day Test at Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Australia weren’t in the best of positions by any means. To add to their agony, India bowled them out for 151 to take a lead of 292 runs. Nevertheless, Pat Cummins ripped the heart out the hosts’ batting lineup. By the close of Day 3, India are leading by 346 runs with five wickets remaining in their second innings.

Bumrah soars above expectations

Ishant Sharma picked up the first wicket of the day with the dismissal of Aaron Finch. After a couple of overs, Jasprit Bumrah accounted for Marcus Harris’ wicket. The left-hander scored 22 with two fours. Usman Khawaja, after scoring a 32-ball 21, fell prey to Ravindra Jadeja. Thereafter, Bumrah laid into the hapless Aussie batting lineup and picked up a six-wicket haul, also his best figures in Tests.

His stupendous spell turned out to be a tough nut to crack for Tim Paine’s men. Apart from Harris and Khawaja, only skipper Paine got into the 20s, but none could convert their respective starts. Pacer Mohammed Shami also did his bit with the wicket of Pat Cummins, who played out 48 deliveries. It went without saying that Virat Kohli and Co had got the home team by the scruff of its neck.

Cummins strikes back

Despite having a massive lead, Mayank Agarwal and Hanuma Viihari didn’t play any rash stroke and put together 28 in 13 overs. Then stomped in Cummins, who wreaked havoc with four wickets in a space of 19 balls. From 28/0, India were reduced to 32/4 in the 17th over. The 25-year-old got rid of Vihari, whose struggle continued, to start the carnage. In his next over, he removed Cheteshwar Pujara.

He inflicted the body blow as captain Kohli couldn’t open his account and Ajinkya Rahane also couldn’t stave off his venom. Cummins ended the day with figures of 6-2-10-4. On the fourth day’s morning, Australia’s fate would depend on how the seamer bowls. His fast bowling partner Josh Hazlewood dismissed Rohit Sharma in the 23rd over to send half the Indian team back into the hut.
