Australia would desperately want to shed the disappointment of the second day’s play of the fourth Test at the renowned SCG against India off their shoulders. The visiting team kept piling on Tim Paine and Co’s agony as the Aussies trail by a humungous 598 runs with three days left. For them, the match has well and truly gone out of the radar. It only remains to be seen whether they are able to salvage a draw or not.

Pujara carries on

With an overnight score of 303, Cheteshwar Pujara and Hanuma Vihari started proceedings, but off-spinner Nathan Lyon got rid of the latter, who scored 42. Ajinkya Rahane’s indifferent series continued as he could only score 18 before succumbing to a vicious bouncer from Mitchell Starc. Pujara looked good for a double century, but unfortunately, he ended up giving a simple caught and bowled to Lyon.

The Saurashtra-batsman scored a magnificent 193 runs from 373 balls with 22 boundaries. Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja then took charge and added to Australia’s agony. Pant accomplished his half-century in 85 balls. At the end of the second session, India were at 491/6. After the break, Pant racked up his second ton off 137 balls after the one at Kennington Oval in London against England in September.

Pant and Jadeja lead the visitors

The final session completely belonged to India as they notched 131 runs from 21.2 overs and got themselves up to 622 runs in 167.2 overs. Pant went berserk and he finished with a score of 159 runs from 189 balls with 15 fours and one six off Lyon. On the other hand, Jadeja didn’t die wondering either and he scored 81 runs from 114 balls. Immediately after Lyon castled him, India decided to declare.

With a monstrous score ahead of them, Marcus Harris and Usman Khawaja opened the batting and they somehow managed to play out ten overs without any hiccup. Kuldeep Yadav Mohammed Shami, Jasprit Bumrah, Jadeja tried their hearts out but returned wicketless. While Harris smacked a couple of fours to remain not out on 19 from 27 balls, Khawaja ensured that the bowlers couldn’t breach his defence.
