Melbourne Stars, the last edition’s runners up started the 2019-20 season with a 22-run win against the Brisbane Heat at the Carrara Oval. Glenn Maxwell smashed a 39-ball 83 with 7 fours and five maximums while the next best score for the Stars was only 20. Maxwell’s blitz helped the Stars to finish on 167/7. Tom Banton gave a perfect start to the chase with a 36-ball 64 that included 10 boundaries. Banton was dismissed in the 10th over at the score of 81/3. The Brisbane team couldn’t recover from thereon and could only make 145/8 in their 20 overs.

A rare win for the Stars against Heat:

4 – Only the 4th time in 11 BBL meetings that the Melbourne Stars have managed to beat the Brisbane Heat. Stars have a win % of 36.36 against the Heat; their lowest win percentage against any opposition in the BBL.


A quick-fire knock on comeback:

83 – The 83-run knock by Glenn Maxwell in this match is the highest individual score at 200+ strike rate in the Big Bash League for the Melbourne Stars. Luke Wright scored 70 @ 218.75 SR in the 2013-14 season against Renegades while Peter Handscomb scored 70 @ exactly 200 SR against the Sixers last season. Maxwell’s innings is also the highest BBL score at 200+ SR by any player against Brisbane Heat.


Nearly Maxwell’s best:

83 – Glenn Maxwell’s 83 in this game is his 2nd highest individual score in the BBL. His highest came against the 2017-18 season against the Sydney Sixers also for the Stars.


212.82 – Maxwell had a strike rate of 212.82 during his 39-ball 83. This is the highest strike rate for Maxwell in a BBL inning where he scored 30+ runs or faced 15+ balls. His previous highest was 207.14 where he scored an unbeaten 58 off 28 balls for the Stars in the 2013-14 season against the Melbourne Renegades.


Zampa @ 50:

52 – Adam Zampa became the 12th player in the Big Bash League to claim 50 wickets with the first of the three wickets he picked on Friday. Zampa is only the 3rd spin bowlers to pick 50 BBL wickets. The other two spinners with this feat are Cameron Boyce (65) and Brad Hogg (61).


Rauf starts with a wicket:

2 – Haris Rauf became only the 2nd overseas player to take a wicket with the first ball bowled on BBL debut. Rauf had Max Bryant caught behind in the 4th over of the Brisbane’s innings. Adil Rashid was the first such player who achieved this feat while playing for the Adelaide Strikers against the Melbourne Stars in the 2015-16 season. Luke Wright was dismissed hit wicket on the first ball bowled by Rashid.


Laughlin continues to strike against the Stars:

20 – Ben Laughlin has taken 20 wickets from 11 BBL matches against the Melbourne Stars; the most number of wickets in the BBL for any player against the Stars. Laughlin went past Andrew Tye’s tally of 19 wickets against the Melbourne Stars.


Pierson’s milestone match:

50 – Jimmy Pierson became the 3rd player to feature in 50 BBL matches for the Brisbane Heat. Ben Cutting (67) and Chris Lynn (65) are the other players to represent Brisbane in 50 BBL games.
