The Twenty20 leagues are recent, the latest trending events happening in the different parts of the cricketing world. All the major cricket playing nations are currently organizing their own T20 leagues, in which local as well as overseas players from the world take part and display their talent and abilities. In most of the leagues contested, the major guidelines allows every team to field only four overseas players in their playing XI, but during the fifth edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) allowed the franchises to play five overseas cricketers in their playing XI for all the games of the season.

Many leading Bangladesh cricketers accused the decision by the Bangladesh Cricket Board and mentioned that this is a serious injustice for the local talented players waiting for their chance to showcase their talent. After a healthy discussion with all the franchises, the BCB initiated their decision of allowing five overseas players in BPL 2017. The franchises themselves raised this idea as due to the absence of quality and impact-full players in the Bangladesh domestic circuit.

This discomforting decision taken by the BCB had immediate effects on the number of local players from Bangladesh getting a chance in BPL 5. Most of the franchises even failed to complete its quota of 13 local Bangladeshi cricketers, while composing their respective line-ups. As a result of the above decision, only 79 local players participated in the last edition, while 86 Bangladeshi local cricketers were part of the players picked during the fourth season of BPL.

Finally, after some lengthy discussions and heavy criticism, the BCB President Nazmul Hasan confirmed that the franchises will be allowed only to include four overseas cricketers to be part of each team’s playing XI in the next edition of the BPL. The BCB has also allowed the teams to retain a maximum of four old players, which includes the foreign cricketers as well, for the upcoming season. The BCB officials also added that they are thinking of hosting the next BPL season from the first week of October, rather than in late in November.

“We have decided that each franchise can have only four foreign cricketers in the playing XI,” said the BCB President to the media reporters as quoted by Cricbuzz.
