The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has extended the deadlines for the aspiring applicants for the post of the new head coach of the Indian team. The BCCI had invited the applications for the coveted post during late May this year. The announcement had come just before the commencement of the ICC Champions Trophy. It had taken many by surprise since the then coach of the Indian team, Anil Kumble, had been doing a decent job in the role, if not excellent.

However, it was later understood that the tenure of Kumble would have ended after the Champions Trophy. Moreover, Kumble would get a direct entry in the race for the next coach and will not require another application submission to the Indian cricket board. Now, things look to be on slightly different note. Anil Kumble abruptly stepped down from his post of the head coach citing certain reasons.

He revealed that the Indian skipper Virat Kohli was not very comfortable with his style of working. Hence, the relationship between him and Virat Kohli was untenable. Clearly, Kumble might not be interested in taking up the job again. But there are some big names who have emerged as the top contenders for the post.

Top contenders

Former Indian cricketer Virender Sehwag is being tipped as the top contender for being the successor of Kumble at the helm of Indian cricket. Sunrisers Hyderabad coach Tom Moody, who has coaching experience at the international level as well, is another big name in the race. Among the other notable names that have applied for the post are Lalchand Rajput, Dodda Ganesh, and Richard Pybus. Now, as per PTI, the BCCI has extended the deadline for the applications. The new deadline has been set as July 9.

Interestingly, there are a few names like Ravi Shastri who have not applied for the post yet but are still considered to be the favorites for the big post. Shastri, however, had conceded that he would apply only if he is guaranteed the job.
