The Champions Trophy, popularly known as the mini World Cup, is a 50-over tournament played over approximately a couple of weeks. However, the tournament has gone through tough times lately owing to losses incurred by the cricket boards. However, the International Cricket Council (ICC) is contemplating to make some amendments to the tournament.

In order to make the tournament more entertaining and marketable, some of the board members are in favor of converting the tournament into a twenty-over affair. However, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has strongly opposed the idea thrown by the ICC, with whom the BCCI has been involved in a tussle for quite a while.

“Tax-exemption”- a standard practice- ICC

“The format cannot and will not change. The Champions Trophy was introduced as part of the vision of our former president Jagmohan Dalmiya and it’ll be his fifth anniversary when the tournament is hosted by India. This (proposed) move has been brought to the notice of the (BCCI) members and should the ICC persist, there’ll be a strong opposition from India,” a source was quoted as saying by Times of India.

India is scheduled to host the 2021 Champions Trophy and the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup. However, the nation might lose out on hosting the two significant tournaments. The Indian government isn’t allowing a tax exemption to the ICC despite repeated attempts from both the ICC and BCCI in order to get the demand approved.

“The Board expressed their concern around the absence of a tax exemption from the Indian Government for ICC events held in India despite ongoing efforts from both the ICC and BCCI to secure the exemption which is standard practice for major sporting events around the world,” the ICC mentioned in a press release.
