The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) officials have finally released the prize money, which the women players earned during the last year’s ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020. The announcement came just before the team left for an all-format tour to England.

Earlier last month, the Indian board received a lot of flak for not paying the players the amount ICC had given them after they finished as the runners-up in the T20 World Cup. The global event ended on March 8, 2020, but there was no news about handing over the prize money for a year.

But now if sources are to be believed, the board has released the prize money to all the 15 members who were part of the squad. Apart from that, the board has also given players their match fees for their last home series against South Africa in March this year.

BCCI’s negligence for paying match fees to its players not new

“The BCCI had last month asked all the members of the Indian women’s team to send an invoice to claim their prize money for the T20 World Cup, as well as the home series against South Africa. Once the players raised the invoices, we cleared their payment within a day or two. Thus, all the dues of the women’s team have now been cleared,” a reliable source told TOI.

Apparently, all the players have received approximately $26,000 as prize money for the T20 World Cup on account of India ended up being second in the finals against Australia. The news of BCCI not handing over the money, would have never come to light if The Telegraph in England didn’t raise the voice stating the amount was yet to be given.

This is not the first time that the BCCI has done this, as earlier in the 2019-20 Ranji season, it had not given the Jammu and Kashmir players and the support staff their remuneration.

The India women’s team have reached England on June 3 and are all geared up to play a Test match after a gap of seven years against England on June 16.
