All the speculations and clouds of uncertainty hovering over the fate of the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League flew away with IPL chairman Brijesh Patel informing about the “immediate suspension” of the league for an indefinite period.

Questions were being raised in plenty by many on the conduction of the tournament amidst such devastating times, however, the status quo was maintained until no mishap occurred inside the strict bio-secure environment that was created for the league. Being conducted in a cluster-caravan format, things seemed ironed out with half of the tournament conducted uninterruptedly.

Although, slight murmurs started with the midway pulling out of certain players that led to subsequent questions over the continuation of the league. With an alarming increase in new infections in the nation on a daily basis, the security concerns increased amid all the involved stakeholders, and the death punch landed with the virus finally managing to sneak inside one of the most stringent of bio-bubbles.

With two Kolkata Knight Riders players in Varun Chakravarthy, who reportedly exited the bubble to address a shoulder issue, and Sandeep Warrier testing positive, the first blow was landed to the tournament when the Royal Challengers Bangalore expressed their disinterest in taking the field against KKR owing to Covid concerns.

With a scheduled match left in limbo, grimmer news followed the same day with three non-playing members of the Chennai Super Kings franchise turning a positive test. The happening escalated to CSK pulling out of their clash against Rajasthan Royals (which was scheduled to be held on 5th May 2021 originally). Once the news about Delhi Capitals’ Amit Mishra and Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Wriddhiman Saha contracting Covid-19 broke out, the suspension hammer was finally brought down to halt the league with immediate effect.

It is imperative that the tournament is suspended: IPL’s official statement

The IPL Governing council informed that along with BCCI, a unanimous call to postpone the season immediately was taken. “The BCCI does not want to compromise on the safety of the players, support staff, and the other participants involved in organising the IPL. This decision was taken keeping the safety, health and well-being of all the stakeholders in mind,” it said.

“These are difficult times, especially in India and while we have tried to bring in some positivity and cheer, however, it is imperative that the tournament is now suspended, and everyone goes back to their families and loved ones in these trying times. The BCCI will do everything in its powers to arrange for the secure and safe passage of all the participants in IPL 2021,” the statement added.

Thanking all the stakeholders involved in the conduction of the tournament thus far, the BCCI thanked “all the healthcare workers, state associations, players, support staff, franchises, sponsors, partners and all the service providers who have tried their best to organise IPL 2021 even in these extremely difficult times.”.

Meanwhile, amidst all the gloom, the Twitterverse managed to have share some tickling posts as India’s favorite league said goodbye for now.
