Praveen Kumar was an exceptional swing bowler and in the absence of Zaheer Khan, he played a significant part in India’s CB Series triumph in 2008 in Australia. But his red-hot short-temper got him in trouble for arguments off the field. He last played an international game in 2012.
In 2008, he was accused of assaulting a doctor in his hometown, Meerut. He has had several verbal smacks with fans. Lately, he was accused of assaulting with a factory owner in Meerut, which he denies unequivocally. In 2011, he was involved with arguments with fans in a home series against West Indies and later on the tour to England as well.
A couple of years later in a domestic game, he head-butted an opposition player, and the umpires charged him. The match referee said he is not in the right mental frame to play the game. He has also entered politics by joining The Samajwadi Party for Uttar Pradesh elections. The 33-year-old has recently announced his retirement and confessed about having suicidal thoughts for being depressed and alcohol-driven.
