Not many showed interest in the two-match Test series between India and Windies. But all the eyes were on the 18-year-old prodigy Prithvi Shaw who made his international debut in the first match and scored a scintillating century. He backed it up with a half-century in the next game and proved his mettle to the world. He will be opening the innings in Australia as well now and a lot of cricket expert believe it will be a stern test for the youngster. However, Brian Lara doesn’t agree with them.
The Windies legend was in Bengaluru for a Golf event on Saturday as he spoke in length about Shaw. He also recalled the days when he used to pummel the great Australians in their own den. The flamboyant batsman of his playing days felt that the batsman must be mentally strong in order to be successful in any conditions and termed that Shaw is such a cricketer.
“Any young cricketer must dismiss fear. For example, everybody is talking about Prithvi Shaw and how he is going to do on bouncy pitches. He has an inner mental strength, which is very important. Your technique is going to adapt to any condition if your mental strength is strong,” he was quoted as saying by the Times of India.
He is a good player
It wasn’t a cakewalk for Prithvi Shaw during his debut Test series. He was tested by the likes of Shannon Gabriel and Jason Holder with some serious pace. But he came out on top thanks to his temperament. Brian Lara also pointed out the same and also went on to say that Shaw’s performance in Australia shouldn’t be the benchmark to judge him.
“I saw him bat against a couple of West Indies bowlers, who were bowling around the 140s, and he is good. I believe that if he doesn’t have a great tour then it doesn’t mean he won’t have a great career. He is mentally strong. This is how I went about my career. I had a mental strength that was different from others and I wanted to succeed under any condition,” Lara further added.
Prithvi Shaw will take guard on December 6 at the Adelaide Oval in Australia in the first of the four-match Test series and the world will have its eyes on him.
