There has been a lot of sympathy in the cricket world for the former Australian captain Steve Smith after he broke down in a press conference in his hometown Sydney yesterday, but the British press has not melted one bit and is still bashing him brutally. While the Daily Mail came up with the headline ‘Captain Crybaby’, the Daily Star’s headline was ‘Bawl-tampering- the Crying shame of Aussie cheats’.
Australia and England have always shared an intense rivalry between them and it goes way back to the previous century. It’s one of the oldest and the fiercest rivalries in the game and there has never been any love lost between the two camps. However, in this case, the reason why a major chunk of the cricketing world is feeling for Smith is that he has got a punishment which is not generally associated with an offense like ball tampering.
British Media rip Steve Smith a new one
The ball-tampering incidents in the past have at most invited suspensions of 2 or 3 matches and while this incident was quite blatant, a ban on 1-year still seems a bit too harsh and most of the people feel it’s because of the public outrage that Cricket Australia made the decision of handing such a severe punishment to the three players involved including Steve Smith.
Smith in yesterday’s press conference looked absolutely shattered asking for forgiveness with teary eyes which led to many former cricketers asking the fans and the media to soften their stance, however the British media is in no mood to let it go and they are absolutely ripping into the 28-year old who in the recent past has played some remarkable knocks against them, including the recently finished Ashes where he got a couple of hundreds and guided his team to a 4-0 series win.
A few media houses in England have however been a bit compassionate towards Smith as the Daily Express reported the story with the headline ‘Broken’, while the Independent headlined it as ‘Tear, lies, and goodbyes’.
