It became clear that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is looking for a new head coach when it asked for applications from interested candidates. A total of 6 candidates sent their application, including former Indian opener Virender Sehwag. Rumours spread like wildfire that the equation between skipper Virat Kohli and head coach Kumble is not very sound.

Soon, the Committee of Administrators (CoA) decided that the new coach will be selected by the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC). The CAC comprises of three Indian legends, namely- Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and VVS Laxman. The ‘big three’ will start the interview process on 26th June, but it is understood that they want Anil Kumble to continue as the head coach of the Indian cricket team.

Ganguly, Tendulkar and Laxman have asked the 28-year old Indian skipper to attend a meeting, where the three former cricketers will sit with the current captain and the head coach. It is expected that a new coach will be announced after India’s series against West Indies. But a lot will depend on the outcome of the joint meeting.

Why does the CAC wants to retain Anil Kumble?

As a matter of fact, the CAC itself selected Anil Kumble last year as the head coach. But apparently, Kohli is not too satisfied with the former Indian captain’s style of coaching. From the Indian players, it is understood that Kumble is an authoritarian and under his supervision, players are feeling deprived of individual freedom. But the CAC fears that the same thing can happen if they select a new coach.

The forerunner in the race, Sehwag is a man of his opinion. He is known for his straight forward and right-in-the-face attitude. So, the big three apparently is not sure whether someone like Sehwag will be able to handle the massive responsibility. The CAC feels that the current Indian team is a well-composed unit. They are looking forward to keeping the same team till the World Cup 2019. They are also trying the settle the disputes so that Kumble can be handed an extension till 2019’s World Cup.
