Queen’s Park Oval hosted its first set of matches on the sixth day of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2020. It also brought a change of fortunes for the two teams who registered wins. The St Kitts and Nevis Patriots won their first match after four outings while the Jamaica Tallawahs also avoided a hat-trick of losses.

The Patriots faced the defending champions Barbados Tridents in the first match of the day. They opted to bowl first after winning the toss and did a good job. Though the Patriots didn’t pick wickets, they kept a lid on the run-flow. The first wicket fell at 50 but the duo of Johnson Charles and Shai Hope took 7.3 overs to score those runs. Struggle for runs continued even after that as the Tridents were soon reduced to 79/4 in the 13th over.

Corey Anderson and Ashley Nurse then stitched a decent 56-run stand off just 29 balls which propelled them to 151 runs for the loss of seven wickets. They didn’t get the final push as the Tridents scored only 16 runs off last 15 deliveries and lost three wickets. Rayad Emrit was once again economical (1/23) while Jon-Russ Jaggesar returned with the figures of 2/17 in his four overs.

Evin Lewis led the chase for the Patriots despite losing Chris Lynn and Joshua Da Silva early. The scoring was tough early on but still the southpaw spent his time in the middle before smashing the bowlers out of the park. Denesh Ramdin scored a painful 32-ball 20 but stitched a crucial 78-run stand with Lewis for the third wicket. The latter scored 89 runs off 60 balls with two fours and nine maximums.

But when he got out, his team still needed 20 runs off nine balls. But Ben Dunk made sure that there were no more hiccups in the chase scoring an unbeaten 22 off 11 deliveries. He took his team over the finishing line with three balls to spare and helped the Patriots register their first win.

Mujeeb Ur Rahman star for the Tallawahs

In the second match of the day, the Jamaica Tallawahs locked horns against the Guyana Amazon Warriors on the same pitch. After being invited to bat first, the Warriors’ top three disappointed yet again scoring only 17 runs before getting out in 4.5 overs. Shimron Hetmyer endured his third consecutive failure scoring only five runs. Ross Taylor and Nicholas Pooran then slowly rebuilt the innings but at the cost of the run-rate.

Once the 38-run stand was broken courtesy Mujeeb Ur Rahman, the Warriors were reduced to 63/7 in the 15th over. It was only due to Naveen-ul-Haq’s unbeaten 20 that they managed to reach 108/9 in their 20 overs. Mujeeb and Fidel Edwards were the best bowlers for the Tallawahs returning with the figures of 3/11 and 3/30 respectively.

It wasn’t easy for Jamaica team in the chase either. After losing Chadwick Walton early, Glenn Phillips and Jermaine Blackwood played cautiously. But they lost three wickets in just 15 balls and 13 runs to be reduced to 53/4 in the ninth over which soon became 62/5.

This is when Nkrumah Bonner and Andre Russell joined hands and added an unbeaten 51-run stand to help the team get over the line. While the former remained not-out on 30, his partner scored 23* as the Tallawahs won the match with two overs and five wickets in hand.
