The fifth day of the ongoing Caribbean Premier League (CPL) two contrasting matches with the one being a high-scoring affair while the bowlers dominating the other. The first match of the day saw the Trinbago Knight Riders locking horns against the Barbados Tridents. The latter side opted to field first and they managed to keep a lid on the opposition run-scoring.

Lendl Simmons and Sunil Narine struggled to get going. However, once they were dismissed in the 10th over, when the score was 63/2, the middle-order batsmen took charge and pummelled the bowlers. Colin Munro took the initiative first scoring 50 off just 30 balls. The real assault came once Kieron Pollard arrived at the crease. The TKR skipper, along with Darren Bravo, took the attack opposition.

They added 98 runs together in last seven overs to propel the Knight Riders to 185 runs for the loss of three wickets. Pollard remained unbeaten on 41 off just 17 balls with a four and four sixes while Bravo scored 54* off 36 with four fours and as many maximums.

Johnson Charles and Shai Hope started the chase well for the Tridents scoring 68 runs in 8 overs. But once the opening partnership was broken, it was all one-way traffic. Hope couldn’t get going after the powerplay while none of the middle-order batsman crossed the 10-run mark. It was Jason Holder’s 34 off 21 that infused life in the game but it was too late by then.

The Tridents could reach only 166 runs for the loss of six wickets in their 20 overs losing the game by 19 runs. Spinners did the trick yet again conceding only 50 runs in their 10 overs.

St Lucia Zouks continue to impress

St Lucia Zouks seem to have found their winning mojo this season. They continued to impress with their limited resources in the 10th match of the CPL 2020. The Guyana Amazon Warriors had done a good job early on with the ball after losing the toss. At 42/3 in the 7th over, things looked bleak for the Zouks. But it was the partnership between Roston Chase and Mohammad Nabi that revived the innings.

They added 57 runs before Nabi got out (24). Chase, however, continued to play his game and stitched another 43 runs with Javelle Glenn (19). Eventually the Zouks managed to post 144 runs on the board in 20 overs with Chase scoring 66 off 51 deliveries. Imran Tahir was the best bowler for the Warriors picking 3/22.

The Warriors were in tatters early in the chase. They were left reeling at 7/3 in the fifth over and finally, the fans got to see a vintage Nicholas Pooran. He resurrected the innings with Chandrapaul Hemraj and Keemo Paul. But the slow start meant that the Warriors were always behind in the chase. But Pooran was making sure that they had a chance until the penultimate over.

Kesrick Williams castled the left-hander in the 19th over with the opposition needing 21 runs. It was the final nail in the coffin as Pooran’s fighting knock of 68 runs went in vain. The Warriors could only reach 134 runs for the loss of eight wickets. Scott Kuggeliejn (3/24) turned out to be the best bowler for the Zouks and helped them register their third successive win.
