Former England women’s team skipper Charlotte Edwards on Tuesday signed up for defending champions South Australia for the Women’s National Cricket League.

Edwards, who is the first player to score 2500 runs in T20 internationals, quit international cricket after the ICC Women’s World Twenty20 in India earlier this year.

Speaking about the sign-up, she said that she is really excited about the opportunity. “I’m really excited about this opportunity with South Australia, especially with the growth of women’s cricket in Australia at an all-time high,” she said. “The lure of training and playing at Adelaide Oval was an opportunity too good to refuse and off the back of last year’s title, I want to help them achieve sustained success.”

She will join the team which contains some of the stars of Australian cricket namely Megan Schutt and Sarah Coyte. Edwards has already represented Western Australia and Perth Scorchers in Women’s Big Bash League (BBL).

“Her experience within cricket but more importantly with her leadership qualities will be wonderful for the Breezair SA Scorpions squad and for our women’s program,” he added.
