The Windies have been languishing at the bottom of the ICC ODI Rankings for quite a while now. They previously failed to finish amongst the top eight teams within the deadline, September 30, 2017, and was denied a direct qualification for the ICC Cricket World Cup to be staged in England and Wales. Subsequently, they participated in the ongoing qualifiers in Zimbabwe.

Barring Afghanistan, they have rolled over every other opposition and have been clinical throughout the tournament. Meanwhile, they have also secured a berth in the main event next year. Jason Holder’s men played their last game against Scotland in which they were required to win in order to ensure qualification. However, the Scotts dished out some superlative performances and got them on the mat.

Nevertheless, rain interrupted the game during Scotland’s run-chase and the Windies edged past them basis the much-debated Duckworth-Lewis method. Chris Gayle perished for a golden duck in the very first over. However, the Jamaican was delighted with the victory and expressed the same in a recent interaction with the media.

“Cricket is like life”- Gayle

“Mission accomplished, definitely. It has been a long journey and the process we have gone through to qualify, we still have to give thanks even though it was a rain-interrupted game today, but a win is a win. I am so happy to have qualified for another World Cup., I just have to stay fit now and we have a young team, but it will be my last World Cup that is for sure, so I am looking forward to it.” he said.

Gayle has suffered quite a few injuries over the course of his career. The hulking Jamaican cricketer also talked about his fitness while admitting the struggles one has to encounter in the game of cricket. “I need a couple of months to get properly fit and especially I love playing in England and Wales. Lots of the Windies fans over the world are sad that we are in this position, where we have to play the qualifiers. But, cricket is like life, you have ups and downs, and nothing is guaranteed in life,” he added.
