The final stage of the innings was set, they had a decent total on the board with the big hitter at the crease and the license to go for the kill. Team India had 233 runs on the board and with Hardik Pandya in the middle had a great chance of getting somewhere close to 265 runs in the last 3 overs. On the 4th ball of the 48th over, he went for the big shot but didn’t quite connect and Steve Smith at covers pocketed it.

But the Australian skipper doubted that the Kane Richardson delivery might be above waist height and thus he shouted to get the attention of his bowler and got him to take off the bails for a runout. Pandya didn’t even attempt to take a run and was just walking off amidst it started to rain and the play was halted as well. Replays suggested that the ball was above the waist of the batsman and thus it was not a legitimate delivery.

The Australians claimed a run out if it was a no ball but the umpire Anil Choudhary rather ruled it not out. During the interruption, the Aussies were clearing it out with the umpires what was the basis for their decision.

Law 27.7

As per “Law 27.7 Batsman leaving his wicket under a misapprehension An umpire shall intervene if satisfied that a batsman, not having been given out, has left his wicket under a misapprehension that he is out. The umpire intervening shall call and signal Dead ball to prevent any further action by the fielding side and shall recall the batsman.”

The Indians were given a free hit when play resumed and it was Bhuvneshwar Kumar, the non-striker on the previous delivery who played it. Pandya and the batting team couldn’t make the most of the death overs and settled with an average total of 252 all out in 50 overs. The all-rounder in the follow-up of his crazy knock managed 20 off 26 balls and couldn’t quite give the team the kind of finish they would’ve expected.
