For the first time in the ongoing edition of the CPL, St Lucia Zouks find themselves at the bottom of the table. With four matches up their sleeves, Daren Sammy and Co don’t have much room for complacency. Their first home match against the Trinbago Knight Riders got washed off after only 12 overs. They are next scheduled to lock horns with the St Kitts and Nevis Patriots at home itself.
The Patriots, on the other hand, have managed to recover after a poor start and are on a three-match winning streak. In their last meeting with the Zouks, the Patriots thrashed them by six wickets with 31 balls to spare. If the Patriots win their next match, they’ll overtake the Trinbago Knight Riders. A loss will put them in a precarious position as they’ll have only one league game remaining.
Pitch and Conditions
The last game at the venue saw some assistance for the slower bowlers. The pitch held up a wee bit and the batters had to be judicious while playing their shots. There are forecasts of rain the DLS Method may come into play. Batting will also be easier in the second half because of the dew. Hence, fielding first after winning the toss should be the way forward for the teams.
Team Combinations
St Lucia Zouks
The Zouks seem a tad rattled after the string of defeats. They have demoted Rahkeem Cornwall, their leading run-scorer, to the middle order and the tactic seemed to have backfired. The rest of the batting unit has been very inconsistent. Colin Ingram failed versus the Tridents, but made amends with a half-century versus TKR. In a jittery batting lineup, his role will be of prime importance.
Colin de Grandhomme and Andre Fletcher have blown hot and cold thus far. In the bowling unit, Obed McCoy has been their standout performer, having gotten nine wickets at a reasonable economy of 8.08. Kesrick Williams and Fawad Ahmed have been decent, but need to be more penetrative. The biggest disappointment has been Hardus Viljoen, who is wicketless thus far.
Probable XI
Andre Fletcher (wk), John Campbell, Colin Ingram, Colin de Grandhomme, Rahkeem Cornwall, Daren Sammy (C), Christopher Barnwell, Jeavor Royal, Hardus Viljoen, Kesrick Williams, Fawad Ahmed
St Kitts and Nevis Patriots
The Patriots’ batting has been led by Evin Lewis, who has 227 runs at a strike-rate of 180.15. The southpaw has gotten apt support from the likes of Devon Thomas and Laurie Evans. But the massive X-factor of their batting has been Fabian Allen. Coming lower down the order, the right-hander has mustered 191 runs at 183.65. He has shown the ability to take on the bowling from the outset.
The experienced Mohammad Hafeez has blown a tad hot and cold. Carlos Brathwaite got his form back with the bat after his match-winning fifty versus TKR. He needs to show more consistency with the ball though. Sheldon Cottrell and Rayad Emrit hold the key in the bowling attack, having gotten nine and eight wickets respectively. Pacer Alzarri Joseph has also been decent with six wickets.
Probable XI
Devon Thomas (wk), Evin Lewis, Laurie Evans, Mohammad Hafeez, Shamarh Brooks, Carlos Brathwaite (C), Fabian Allen, Keron Cottoy, Rayad Emrit, Sheldon Cottrell, Alzarri Joseph
