Steve Smith was Australia’s all-format captain until the ball-tampering saga took place. He was not looked at as a captaincy option when he returned from a year ban but that incident is long gone now. Also, Cricket Australia seems to have moved on from that debacle.

This is evident from the fact that Australia named Smith as Cummins’s deputy and the ace-batter then went on to lead the Aussies in the second Ashes Test when the veteran pacer was out due to Covid.

Smith’s captaincy credentials have never been in doubt and the 33-year-old is still Australia's key figure in the side. So with Finch’s ODI retirement, Smith could become the next limited-overs captain of Australia.
