Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will be up against each other in the 23rd match of the IPL 2024. The match is set to take place at Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur. At the new stadium, only one match has taken place so far which was won by the home side. DC lost to PBKS by six wickets earlier this season. Both teams would be aiming to claim a win which would help them to get a confidence booster.

Both PBKS and SRH are on the back of a win in their last match. SRH defeated CSK by six wickets chasing a target of 166 runs. Abhishek Sharma killed the game in the powerplay overs with his 37(12). For PBKS, Shashank Singh was the hero who scored a brilliant unbeaten 61*(29) and took his side home with the help of Ashutosh Sharma at the other end. PBKS chased down 200 runs against GT in their own backyard and became the team with most number of 200+ successful chases.

Both teams have had a similar journey in the league so far. Both SRH and PBKS have two wins and losses respectively in their four matches. While SRH is placed in the fifth position, PBKS is placed in the sixth position in the points table. PBKS has some of the most talented players in the world. They also have some star players like Shikhar Dhawan, Jonny Bairstow, Sam Curran, Arshdeep Singh, and Kagiso Rabada in their lineup. SRH has a great set of players too.

Here is the probable playing XI for SRH for the match against PBKS in IPL 2024, Match 23 -

Openers - Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head

SRH is likely to continue with the opening pair of Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head. They started with a top order containing Mayank Agarwal and Rahul Tripathi. However, the Indian duo has failed to live up to the expectations of the team. Abhishek, who batted at 3 in the game against MI and GT, got a chance to open against CSK and blasted 37(12). The Southpaw can play impactful cameos and go big too. If necessary, he can offer an over or two with the ball.

Travis Head has been good as a batter for SRH. The star batter has been scoring runs at a good rate. He played a great knock in the game against MI and impacted the result. If necessary, he can bowl an over or two. Both Head and Sharma are good fielders and can claim stunning catches that can change the complexion of the game. With two aggressive batters at the top, SRH tends to play without pressure lower down the order where there are youngsters.

Middle Order - Aiden Markram, Heinrich Klaasen (WK), and Abdul Samad

In the middle order, SRH has the South African giant batters like Aiden Markram and Heinrich Klaasen. In addition to that, they also have a young batter like Abdul Samad. Markram has done decently as a batter in the ongoing season. The star batter would love to convert his starts and play bigger innings. On his day, Markram can smash the best bowlers in the world for fun. If required, he can deliver with the ball as well. Not to forget, the South African is a brilliant fielder.

To follow him would likely be Heinrich Klaasen. He has been one of the best batters in T20 cricket in the last two years or so. The right-handed batter has only two gears. At the start, he loves to take some time to get set and later on launch the bowlers for fun. He will also keep the wickets for SRH and is good with the gloves. To follow him would be Abdul Samad who can play good knocks lower down the order. He has played a couple of good knocks in the season so far.

All-Rounders - Shahbaz Ahmed and Nitish Kumar Reddy

In the All-Rounders department, SRH has some good names among the local talents. Shabaz Ahmed has been given a longer run in the team. Against KKR, the Southpaw played a brilliant cameo with the bat. He is yet to deliver a match-winning spell with the ball but he has the ability to bowl well. Nitish Kumar Reddy played the previous game against CSK. The talented all-rounder did not get enough opportunities to showcase his talent.

As the job was done by the likes of Head, Sharma, and Markram, he was left with nearly nothing to score. If required, he can bowl an over or two. In addition to them, SRH has options like Washington Sundar and Marco Jansen who have proven themselves at the highest level. If any of the Indian youngsters fail to perform, they might make it to the side. All in all, SRH has a good set of all-rounders. The key for these players would be to deliver the goods consistently.

In the bowling department, SRH is pretty good. With the new ball, Bhuvneshwar Kumar will bowl two overs. With his swing, the experienced bowler can trouble the best batters in the world. To assist him with the new ball is likely to be Jaydev Unadkat, T Natarajan, and Pat Cummins who might all share an over or two. If necessary and matchups demand, SRH has spin options like Shahbaz and Abhishek who can bowl in the powerplay overs.

In the middle overs, SRH has several options like Cummins, Unadkat, and Mayank Markande. Cummins has bowled well in the league so far. Unadkat has been impressive in the chances he has gotten. Markande needs to step up with the ball. In the death overs, Bhuvneshwar might bowl an over or two. With him, Cummins and Unadkat are likely to share the responsibilities. So far, they have been bowling well as a unit. The key would be to operate well as a unit.
