Realities can often be disappointing, and retirement is one of them. With age, it is difficult for players to maintain the same fitness levels and thrive in an intense sport such as cricket. Therefore, players call time on their careers after a certain age when they are not at the peak of their powers.
Many players also hang their boots in a particular format to focus on others. With the boom of franchise leagues worldwide and hectic international schedules, some cricketers have followed the same route. For instance, in 2022, England all-rounder Ben Stokes gave up One-day cricket to extend his career in other formats.
Certain top-drawer players who have lighted the international arena with their spectacular performances might retire from the game's longest format in 2023.
Here are ten cricketers who might retire from Tests in 2023
10. Wriddhiman Saha
Wriddhiman Saha is one the finest wicketkeepers Indian cricket has ever produced. The 38-year-old is lightning-quick behind the stumps and is equally suited to keeping on bouncy tracks as well as vicious turning tracks. He has taken 92 catches and 12 stumpings in his Test career.
However, Saha was not consistent with the bat and could only score 1353 runs in 40 matches at an average of 29.41. He was India’s first-choice wicketkeeper after MS Dhoni hung his boots in the Test arena but the Shaktigarh-born was able to impress with his batting exploits.
On the other hand, Rishabh Pant broke into India’s Test side in August 2018 and took the international arena by storm with his spectacular performances. Pant’s meteoric rise made it difficult for Saha to break into the playing XI and eventually was dropped from the side after the 2021-22 Test series against South Africa.
Saha has not been in India’s scheme of things ever since. It seems as if the team management has moved past him and thus, one could witness the 38-year-old retire from the longest format in 2023.
