Indian veteran Virat Kohli is regarded as one of the most passionate and aggressive captains the game has seen. While he has achieved several milestones as a player and led India to numerous memorable victories, his captaincy tenure also saw some notable lows, both in international cricket and the Indian Premier League. Here let us look at five of the worst records that marked his captaincy career.

One of the biggest setbacks under Kohli's leadership came during the Adelaide Test against Australia in 2020, where India recorded their lowest-ever Test score, as they were dismissed for 36 runs. It was a dismal batting collapse, with none of the players reaching double digits in the second innings. The historic low remains one of the most disappointing moments in Indian Test history.

Another major heartbreak came during the 2021 T20 World Cup, when India suffered a crushing 10-wicket defeat against Pakistan. It was the first time an Indian team had lost by such a margin in an ICC event. Pakistan chased down the target of 152 runs without losing a wicket, sealing the win with 13 balls to spare.

Kohli also holds the unfortunate record for captaining Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) during their lowest-ever IPL performance. In a 2017 match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, RCB were bowled out for just 49 runs while chasing 132, setting the record for the lowest team total in IPL history.

Despite leading India in multiple ICC tournaments, Kohli was unable to win an ICC trophy. Under his captaincy, India finished as runners-up in the 2017 Champions Trophy, were knocked out in the semi-finals of the 2019 World Cup, lost the 2021 World Test Championship Final to New Zealand, and failed to make the knockout stages of the 2021 T20 World Cup.

Kohli’s long stint as RCB captain in the IPL ended without a title. Despite leading the side for nearly a decade and having some of the biggest names in T20 cricket, he could not take the franchise over the line under his leadership. He also holds the record for second-most losses (70) as a captain in IPL history after MS Dhoni (97).
