IPL Orange Cap Winners 2008–2024: Where are they now?

There have been some great cricketers who have gone on to win the prestigious award in the tournament.</p>
<p>Though the winners of the Orange Cap over the years in the cash-rich tournament are well-known, it is time to discuss the current status of these players. It will be interesting to learn about what the players have done and what they are currently doing in their day-to-day lives after gaining the attention of the fans after their great performance in that respective season.</p>

The best batter for the franchise was Australia's top-order batter&nbsp;<a href="https://www.crictracker.com/cricket-players/shaun-marsh/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Shaun Marsh</strong></a>, who lit up the season for the team, scoring 616 runs at an average of 68.44 and had a strike rate of 139.68. These performances officially made him the first orange cap winner in the tournament.</p>

<p>Former India wicketkeeper-batter <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/cricket-players/robin-uthappa/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Robin Uthappa</strong></a> has had a decent IPL career, where he has played for six teams and more than 200 games in the tournament. However, the main highlight of his IPL career came in 2014, playing for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Uthappa won the Orange Cap, scoring 660 runs at an average of 44 and had a strike rate of 137.78, and was one of the key performers who helped the team win their second IPL title.</p>
<p>The 39-year-old former opener played his last IPL match in 2022, where he represented the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) against the Mumbai Indians, and has now grown into becoming a well-renowned commentator and a YouTuber as well. He is currently part of the IPL 2025 commentary panel.</p>

The Aussie opener had achieved the feat in 2015 (562 runs), 2017 (641 runs), and 2019 (692 runs).</p>
<p>In 2024, Warner decided to retire from international cricket following the T20 World Cup, which Australia lost. <p>The batter who has established himself as one of the best players in the tournament is <strong><a href="https://www.crictracker.com/cricket-players/virat-kohli/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Virat Kohli</a></strong>, who is still the leading run scorer in the tournament. Though Kohli has not managed to take the RCB franchise all the way, he has still been an absolute run machine. He won the Orange Cap in 2016 and 2024 and is the only Indian batter to achieve the feat on multiple occasions. 2016 was his best season in the tournament, where he went on to score 973 runs, which is the most runs by a batter in a single season.</p>
<p>Virat is very much a part of the RCB franchise even today and is enjoying another great season with 614 runs at an average of 55.81. The Bengaluru franchise has also reached their fourth IPL final after beating the Punjab Kings in the finals. <p><strong><a href="https://www.crictracker.com/cricket-players/david-warner/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">David Warner</a></strong>&nbsp;is one of the legendary figures within the IPL who has scored more than 6500 runs and has been a successful captain in the tournament as well. Warner, apart from leading the Sunrisers Hyderabad to their first-ever IPL title, has won the Orange Cap three times, which is the most by any batter in the tournament so far. The Aussie opener had achieved the feat in 2015 (562 runs), 2017 (641 runs), and 2019 (692 runs).</p>
<p>In 2024, Warner decided to retire from international cricket following the T20 World Cup, which Australia lost. However, he continues to be a part of franchise cricket around the globe, and featured in tournaments like the International League T20, Big Bash League, and the Pakistan Super League as well.</p>
<h3>8. Virat Kohli (2016 and 2024) - Active India and RCB cricketer</h3>

<p>The batter who has established himself as one of the best players in the tournament is <strong><a href="https://www.crictracker.com/cricket-players/virat-kohli/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Virat Kohli</a></strong>, who is still the leading run scorer in the tournament. Though Kohli has not managed to take the RCB franchise all the way, he has still been an absolute run machine. He won the Orange Cap in 2016 and 2024 and is the only Indian batter to achieve the feat on multiple occasions. 2016 was his best season in the tournament, where he went on to score 973 runs, which is the most runs by a batter in a single season.</p>
<p>Virat is very much a part of the RCB franchise even today and is enjoying another great season with 614 runs at an average of 55.81. The Bengaluru franchise has also reached their fourth IPL final after beating the Punjab Kings in the finals. After retiring from T20Is and Tests, the Delhi-born continues to represent India in the One-Day Internationals (ODIs).</p>

<h3>9. KL Rahul (2020) - Active India and DC cricketer</h3>

<p><a href="https://www.crictracker.com/cricket-players/kl-rahul/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>KL Rahul</strong></a> has been one of the most consistent batters in the IPL since 2018, where there has only been one season where he has not broken the 400-run mark. Rahul has so far represented five teams in the IPL and has played some of his best knocks while playing for Punjab Kings. The 2020 season was his best season in terms of runs, scoring 670 runs at an average of 55.83.</p>
<p>Rahul was representing the Delhi Capitals in the 2025 season, and despite being a late entrant owing to an injury, he ended as the highest run-getter for the franchise with 539 runs from 13 games at an average of 53.90.Though the Capitals failed to qualify for the Playoffs by a whisker, the Bengaluru-born still looked in great form in the tournament, which is one of the positives for the franchise. He continues to be a core member of the Indian team in the international arena as well.</p>

<p>The IPL is known for promoting some upcoming stars in the tournament, and one such name for Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the 2021 season was <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/cricket-players/ruturaj-gaikwad/" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><strong>Ruturaj Gaikwad</strong></a>. The current CSK skipper established himself in the 2021 edition, emerging as the top run scorer with 635 runs at an average of 45.35. Gaikwad went on to be one of the top run-getters for the franchise in 2023 and 2024 as well.</p>
<p>The 28-year-old top-order batter’s IPL 2025 season was currently cut short after five matches due to a hairline fracture on the left arm. However, he was recently named in the India A squad and is currently in England, where the team is playing a two-match Test series against the England Lions, and will also play the senior side before the latter commence their five Tests against England.</p>

<p>The English players tend to struggle and get going in the IPL. However, the same could not be said about <strong><a href="https://www.crictracker.com/cricket-players/jos-buttler/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Jos Buttler</a></strong>. The hard-hitting stumper-batter in the 121 games he has played has scored 4120 runs at an average of 40 and has a phenomenal strike rate of 149.38. The best season of the 34-year-old Englishman came in the 2022 edition while representing the Rajasthan Royals, where he scored 863 runs at an average of 57.53. This made him the first English cricketer to bag the Orange Cap as well.</p>
<p>Buttler was having a great season in 2025 as well, where he scored 538 runs at an average of 59.77 and had a strike rate of 163.03 while playing for the Gujarat Titans. However, he was ruled out of the Playoffs due to national duties and is currently playing in the three-match ODI series against the West Indies.</p>

<p>One of the brightest stars in Indian cricketing circles is none other than Fazilka-born opener <strong><a href="https://www.crictracker.com/cricket-players/shubman-gill/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Shubman Gill</a></strong>. The 25-year-old stylish player has been performing consistently in the last couple of seasons and had a dream season in the 2023 edition, scoring 890 runs at an average of 59.33 playing for the Gujarat Titans.</p>
<p>Gill was appointed as the Titans' skipper in 2024 and has led them into the playoffs of the 2025 edition as well. He is once again one of the top run scorers for the team this year with 649 runs at an average of 54.08 to his name this season. Despite having a fantastic season, GT ended fourth in the league as they lost to Mumbai Indians in a do-or-die Eliminator clash.</p>
