Test cricket has produced numerous stars across the globe. Similarly, Indian cricket has witnessed the rise of several legendary players who made their mark in the longest format of the game. Rahul Dravid, famously known as ‘The Wall of Cricket’, earned that title through his unmatched defensive technique and composure at the crease. In a similar vein, Virat Kohli, who initially rose to prominence in white-ball cricket, solidified his legacy through his performances and leadership in Test matches.

Kohli bid adieu to the red-ball internationals in May 2024, leaving behind a huge void, as he was not only the most important batter in the line-up but also a key leadership figure. With his departure, India announced Shubman Gill as the new captain, while Rishabh Pant - the star wicketkeeper-batter became his deputy in whites. Pant has been one of the most successful batters for India in recent years, and it is a good time to have a look at his prominence.

Kohli redefined Indian Test cricket with his aggressive captaincy, remarkable consistency, and deep passion for the sport. Following in his footsteps, the next generation has started to take centre stage, most notably, wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant. The flamboyant left-hander began his professional journey through T20 cricket, showcasing his explosive skills in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and domestic tournaments.

Eventually, Pant transitioned into red-ball cricket, bringing the same aggressive mindset to the format. At first, many experts and fans doubted whether his attacking style could sustain in Test cricket, a format known for patience. However, Pant silenced critics with his fearless approach, proving that his style not only fits but can travel in the Test arena.

Pant’s defining moment came during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) in 2020–21. With the series tied at 1-1 and India plagued by injuries, Pant delivered a match-winning unbeaten knock of 89* in the fourth Test at the Gabba in Brisbane. His innings led India to a historic victory, ending Australia’s unbeaten streak at the venue and securing back-to-back series wins down under.

Unlike traditional Test cricketers who focus on defence and calculated risks, Pant plays with natural aggression. He is unafraid to attack from the outset, always looking to dominate bowlers regardless of the match situation. His bold style brings excitement and unpredictability to the game, which makes him a fan favourite.

Pant was involved in a serious car accident in 2022, suffering multiple injuries that cast doubt on whether he would ever play cricket again. However, he defied all odds, made a remarkable comeback after being away from the sport for over a year and showcased extraordinary mental strength, rising through the ranks once again and proving his resilience to the world.

Most recently, Pant was a key figure in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy 2025 against England. Unfortunately, his tour was cut short due to a fracture in his right foot. Despite the injury, he displayed tremendous grit by playing a crucial innings in the fourth Test at Old Trafford, Manchester, helping India in the first innings.

Before his injury, Pant had already scored 479 runs in just seven innings, making him the third-highest run-scorer in the series. His performance, despite the physical setback, earned widespread praise and highlighted his growing commitment to the team.

With time and experience, there is great belief that Pant will become an even bigger star in the setup of Indian cricket.
