Chennai Super Kings (CSK) ended their 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) campaign at the bottom of the points table. CSK were the first team to be eliminated from the tournament this year and managed to win only four matches out of the 14 they played. Known for their consistency in the tournament, CSK have recorded back-to-back eliminations for the first time in the history of the IPL after not qualifying in 2024 as well. The Men in Yellow endured a tough season as things simply did not go their way. This is also CSK's first-ever wooden spoon finish. On that note, let us take a closer look at what went wrong for CSK in IPL 2025.
Three key reasons behind CSK's downfall in IPL 2025
1. Inability to set big totals

CSK consistently struggled to post competitive scores in the first innings. Most of their totals were below par which made it easier for the opposition to chase them down. The only exception was their final match of the campaign, where they posted a high score of 230 against Gujarat Titans (GT). Apart from that, their batting unit failed to deliver convincing first-innings totals as they seemingly played an outdated brand of cricket. However, CSK improved on that aspect significantly after the addition of some young talents like Ayush Mhatre and Dewald Brevis.
