Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) released Andre Russell ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 mini-auction, which is scheduled to be held on December 16 at the Etihad Arena in Abu Dhabi. The Caribbean all-rounder had been a part of the KKR franchise for 12 seasons. He won the coveted IPL title twice during his tenure.
However, the experienced campaigner did not have a memorable time with bat and ball during IPL 2025 after being retained ahead of last year's mega-auction for INR 12 crore. While reports had emerged ahead of the retention deadline of November 15 that Russell would be released by KKR, not many would have believed it. The KKR management and Russell share great camaraderie, and everyone hoped that the 37-year-old would get a shot at redemption in the Purple and Gold jersey next year.
However, KKR eventually dropped a bombshell, parting ways with the Jamaican star. A couple of weeks later, Russell retired from the IPL, signing for KKR in a unique role as Power Coach of the franchise in the 2026 season.
Before this announcement, Russell was being linked with different franchises, Chennai Super Kings being the frontrunner due to their massive purse heading into the mini-auction. However, the talismanic all-rounder continues to bleed Purple and Gold, and he made it clear that he won't want to wear any other jersey in the cash-rich league.
Will KKR repent releasing Andre Russell?
It can be said with a great deal of conviction that Russell wouldn't have retired from the IPL had he been retained by KKR. In the mini-auction, the three-time champions might not find too many players who could fill the boots of the Jamaican icon.
KKR, who currently have the highest purse (INR 64.3 crore) heading into the auction, are reportedly interested in signing Cameron Green. CSK are second on this list with INR 43.4 crore. Even if the Kolkata-based franchise retained Russell for INR 12 crore, they would have had the highest purse and could have still acquired the services of Cameron Green. However, they would have had to release Rovman Powell in that case, as having three overseas batting all-rounders would have upset the balance of the side.
While Russell might not be the same force he once was, he still has the aura about him and gives his 200% in every game. KKR would have undoubtedly benefited from his presence as opposition teams used to plan differently with Russell in the side.
Captains would keep overs from their best bowlers on hold, as they would want them to be bowled to Russell. This would give the top-order batters in KKR a chance to take the weaker bowlers in the team to the cleaners. When Russell is in form, he has the ability to win games single-handedly. The Knights could miss a proven match-winner like him next season.
